[did you know?] Portmanteau

A "portmanteau word," according to Merriam-Webster online, is a word or morpheme whose form and meaning are derived from a blending of two or more distinct forms (as smog from smoke and fog).  According to Wikipedia, the word "portmanteau" itself is a portmanteau; it actually means a coat hanger in French, coming from porter (French for "to carry") and manteau (French for "coat").  Also according to Wikipedia, the term blend in linguistics is used to refer to ageneral combination of words, and the term “portmanteau” is reserved for the narrow sense of combining two function words.  Did you know? :-D
